Day6: Discovery Island

Our last day was to be a busy one. Get in everything that you haven't done yet 'cause the plane leaves tonight! The plan was to meet up with Kathy at Discovery Island, a lush sanctuary for exotic birds and beasts.

First off, we got a tee-time for Fantasia Golf. Much more than just mini-golf, there are actual fairways, rough, and sand traps. Katie couldn't stop laughing when I proclaimed that I was the only one who could lose a ball in miniature golf!

Katie is into horses now (what 11yr old girl isn't?) and so we took bus-boat-bus-bus to find the stables. It was also a boat departure point for Discovery Island. BTW, the "Wilderness Lodge" is down the road and I grabbed a bite there while Katie was out riding (I was thrown from a horse the first time I rode...) The Lodge is designed similar to the great railroad hotels and has an enormous 4-story natural log atrium. It even has it's own "geyser" reminiscent of Old Faithful.

Discovery Island

At last we arrive, hours late. Will we find Kathy in this tropical paradise? We quickly lose track as we wander up to a bald eagle sitting on a branch just a few yards away (it's a "rescued" flightless bird). Moving further into the park, we see so many exotic colors in both the birds and the flowers.

Look closely to see the alligator. Since our arrival in Florida, I've been looking for 'gators. When we finally saw this one, it was so hidden I would have probably stepped right on it. Look even closer and you'll see two pennies sitting on its nose. I call this shot "My 2 cents on Alligators."

One of the nicest features on Discovery Island is the enormous aviary that you can actually go inside. This is a photographer's dream, letting you get close and not have to worry about wires or cages in your viewfinder. We have many beautiful bird shots that will end up on our walls....

So we got on the plane and went home. Back to the cold and the snow. But the good news is that we're actually staying home for Christmas this year, the first time in more than a decade, and we look forward to sharing the holidays with all of our friends in Minnesota.

Well, that's about all I can put on the website for now - I enjoyed our vacation so much that I could load up another 20-30 shots, but there's also so many fun new features at MN-Realty to work on, and so little time. Happy Holidays from our family to yours!
