Situated on the clear waters of White Bear Lake, which has several public accesses, the city offers an abundance of outdoor recreation, including biking, boating, sailboarding, yachting, swimming and fishing.

White Bear Lake's name originated from a Sioux Indian legend. In the story, a Sioux hunter slays a White Bear on Manitou Island, whose spirit is said to live on on Manitou Island. That "spirit" is the basis of an annual celebration in White Bear Lake: Manitou Days, which includes music, a parade, fireworks and other festivities.
In addition to traditional schools, District 624 also offers classes adult and youth enrichment classes, recreation programs, and activities for seniors.

Golf courses, beaches, lakes and trails can all be found within the boundaries of White Bear Lake - offering residents many opportunities to enjoy the outdoors. Many of the parks include facilities for picnics, fishing, skating and swimming as well as fields for softball, volleyball and basketball.

White Bear Lake itself is the second largest lake within the metropolitan area. The lake's width makes it a great place to enjoy sailing, windsurfing, water skiing, boating and fishing in the summer, and cross country skiing, skating, ice fishing and ice boating in the winter.

In the last few years, White Bear Lake's focus has turned from residential to commercial development. White Bear Lake hosts several national companies, as well as a bustling downtown with a great variety of retail shops.

With White Bear's rich history, charming downtown, and a beautiful lake setting, it's easy to see why over 25,000 people have made it their home. Many of the houses started out as summer homes of Twin Citians looking for a place to relax and get away from the city.

In the '50s and '60s, White Bear Lake enjoyed a housing boom, increasing the number of different types of homes available. From luxurious lake homes to more modest one story homes, residents have many different styles to choose from. There are also a number of condominium, apartment and townhome communities within the city.

Many of the homes (both old and new) are located right on the shores White Bear Lake, or near city parks - giving many residents access to recreational activities within walking distance.
