Located in the southwestern Twin City suburbs, Prior Lake residents enjoy the best of both worlds: big city convenience and small lake-town atmosphere. The city is centered around a lake by the same name which is nearly 16 square miles in size.
Prior Lake was named for landowner and railroad employee Charles H. Prior. In 1872, Charles Prior brought the line of the Hastings and Dakota divisions of the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railroad. The railroad brought businesses and travellers to the town, and built the basis for Prior Lake as we know it today.
Prior Lake's City Offices are located at 16200 Eagle Creek Avenue, Prior Lake,
MN 55372-1714, (952) 447-4230. The offices are available to the public 8:00
a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Prior Lake's park system boasts over 350 acres of park land that makes up 25 different parks
and recreation areas throughout the city. Two of the major and most used parks are Lakefront Park
and Lions Sand Pointe Beach. Both of these parks offer a swimming beach and picnic pavilions. Lakefront
Park also hosts athletic events such as baseball, softball, football and soccer.

One of Prior Lake's most well known attractions is Mystic Lake Casino, Minnesota's largest gaming and entertainment facility. Prior Lake is also home to The Wilds, (pictured above) a world class golf course designed by Tom Weiskopf & Jay Morrish. The Wilds was recently rated fourth best new upscale daily fee facility in the United States by Golf Digest.

Students in Prior Lake are served by four public elementary schools and two secondary schools. These include the Early Learning School (Kindergarten), Westwood Elementary School (grades 1 & 2), Five Hawks Elementary School (grades 3 & 4), Grainwood Elementary School (grades 5 & 6), Hidden Oaks Middle School (grades 7 & 8), and Prior Lake Senior High School (grades 9 - 12).
In addition to the public schools, Prior Lake students can choose from 3 parochial schools; St. Michael;s Catholic School, St. Paul's Lutheran School and Prior Lake Christian School.

The proximity of many of the homes to the lake allows residents to share a common focus: lake recreation. Residents can enjoy the many common beaches, swimming areas and boating opportunities right on Prior Lake. Although lake-living is often linked with expensive, executive homes, many of the homes on Prior Lake are casual and less assuming. Moving away from the lake, most houses are newer and in the mid-price range.
