Oakdale is a friendly community. It's name was chosen as a reflection of the many stands of oak trees and the valleys. In the 1930's it was a major farming community and in the winter, they would cut ice from Tanner lake and sell it for the ice boxes. Today, Oakdale is a growing community focused on economic development. Oakdale is an inner suburb which has a balance of residential, commercial and industrial areas. Residents enjoy 20+ parks, picnic areas, multi-use trails, and skating rinks.
Nestled in between Maplewood and Lake Elmo, Oakdale is approximately ten miles north of downtown St.Paul. is located approximately nine miles south of the city of Minneapolis, north of highway 494 and just west of 35W.
