Moundsview, New Brighton, and the surrounding area were first inhabited by Dakota (Sioux) and Ojibway (Chippewa) Indians who were drawn to the area for its rich land - perfect for rice. The Native Americans eventually settled near Long Lake at Rice Creek.
French and English settlers came into the area in the mid-1800's, looking for land to homestead and farm. By 1858, the settlement was named Mounds View Township.
The area received a huge boost in 1888 with the formation of the Minneapolis Stockyards and Packing Company, which was soon followed by several other packing plants, an iron rolling mill, and a number of hotels. The most famous of these was the Cattlemen's Hotel (later known as the Exchange Building), which could host 150 guests and was ultra-modern for the times.

Today, New Brighton has a population of just over 22,000 people, while Moundsview has about 12,500. Both communities lie just north of the Twin Cities metropolitan area, with easy access via I-694 and 35W.

New Brighton has 12 parks in the city, as well as an extensive trail system. In fact, no resident of New Brighton lives more than 3/8ths of a mile from a neighborhood park or activity area. Long Lake Park is the largest in the area, occupying 200 acres of land an providing picnic areas, walking, biking and hiking trails, a swimming beach and an elaborate playground.
