The city of Maplewood sprang from humble beginnings as farmland lying on the outskirts of St. Paul and near the town of North St. Paul. In the last 30 years, however, Maplewood has earned its identity as an attractive community in which to live, work and raise a family.

One of Maplewood's finest features is the Maplewood Community Center - containing a fully appointed fitness center with a pool/aquatic area, aerobic room, weight room, and a track and fitness area. In addition, the center also holds a theatre with seating for 278, banquet and meeting rooms, a senior lounge, and a craft room.

One of the key factors in the growth and development of Maplewood has been worldwide corporate headquarters of the 3M company. Currently, 3M provides jobs for over 12,000 people. The Maplewood site is comprised of 425 acres with 40 buildings.
Another major source of employment is the Maplewood Mall. With large retail anchors including Sears and Dayton's, as well as many smaller shops, the mall is a significant retail industry contributor to the local economy.

Students in Maplewood are served by the North St. Paul/Maplewood/Oakdale School District #622. Currently, more than 11,000 students attend the 10 elementary, 3 middle schools and 2 high schools in the district.

Maplewood also offers Century College - a two year institution that serves over 7,000 students each year. In addition to college credit classes, Century College holds a variety of non-credit classes for personal or career enrichment.

Maplewood, like many of the Twin Cities suburbs, is rich in parks and recreation areas. For more information on these parks, call the Maplewood Parks and Recreation Department at (651) 770-4570.

The city-funded Maplewood Nature Center offers environmental programs for schools, groups, families and the general public. The center also offers interactive displays and trail systems for the use of the general public.
