Downtown

Welcome to Minneapolis: a thriving modern city located just 8 miles from the state's capital, St. Paul. Like its sister city, the heart of Minneapolis lies in the downtown districts which hold rich offerings for all of its residents.

There are numerous internet sites dedicated to Minneapolis, so rather than duplicate their efforts, MN Realty Web would like to offer this quick overview with some of our own ideas and images.

Minneapolis Businesses

In Fortune magazine's 1997 list of the nation's top 500 industrial and service firms, Minneapolis was the 8th most represented city in the US. Just some of the corporations located in Minneapolis include Dayton-Hudsons, Cargill, Pillsbury and Super Valu.

Museums and Attractions

Located just west of the main downtown area, the Basilica of St. Mary is recognized as one of the finest examples of Beaux Arts architecture in the country, the Basilica of Saint Mary was constructed between 1907 and 1915. It's also the first Basilica in the United States, honored by Pope Pius XI in 1926. It has been named to the National Register of Historic Places.

Downtown Minneapolis offers something for every shopper. Shops range from corner drug stores to elegant department stores. Rounded out by art galleries, boutiques and a great variety of restaurants, shopping downtown is diverse and easy. Parking is free after 4pm and all day on weekends with a $20 purchase from most major stores.

The Orpheum, State, Hey City and Music Box theatres host a variety of concerts and touring theater productions including "Chicago" and "Stomp" at the State Theater; "Bring in da Noise, Bring in da Funk" and "Riverdance" at the Orpheum, "Tony and Tina's Wedding" at the Hey City Theatre; and "Death of a Pickle King," a comedy at the Music Box Theatre. In addition, the University of Minnesota offers frequent high-quality presentations in all areas of the arts - including theater.

Annual Events

The Minneapolis Aquatennial, the country's oldest summertime festival, takes place every year in July. Highlights include a kickoff block party in downtown Minneapolis, two parades, a milk carton boat race (left), a sand-sculpture contest and fireworks.

The Nicolett Mall lights up with the annual Holidazzle parade. Floats and popular childrens' characters done up in lights cruise the mall during the evenings from late November through Dec. 30.

Parks and Recreation

Minneapolis has nearly 170 parks that cover more than 6,300 acres of land and water. Many of these parks are centered around large lakes and include hiking, biking and walking trails, picnic facilities and activities.

Schools

Minneapolis is home to the main campus of the University of Minnesota: one of the country's largest and most respected universities.

The Minneapolis Public School District consists of 77 different schools for students from kindergarten through 12th grade, as well as extensive early childhood, after-school and community education programs.

Sports

The Hubert Humphrey Metrodome is home to the Minnesota Twins (baseball), the Minnesota Vikings (football), and the University of Minnesota Gopher football team. The Timberwolves (basketball), play in their own arena, the Target Center, located on the other side of downtown.

Neighborhoods

Within minutes of the downtown area lie neighborhoods that contain a wide range of housing options, from inexpensive apartments and single-family homes to exclusive larger dwellings. No matter where residents choose to live in Minneapolis, they can be sure that a body of water will be nearby.

Often within walking or biking distance, residents will find nationally known department stores, locally owned-specialty shops, coffeehouses and farmer's markets.
