Lake Elmo

With the growth of the Twin Cities metro area, city dwellers seeking a quieter existence have found Lake Elmo - located on the old main trail between Stillwater and St. Paul. The city boasts a big blue lake of the same name (and 8 other lakes, too!)

Settled in 1880 and incorporated in 1925, Lake Elmo has kept its charming small town feel. The Main Street area holds several first-class restaurants, antique shops, turn-of-the-century brick and wood buildings and this charming grain elevator.

Lake Elmo is also home to the Washington County Fairgrounds and the annual August county fair.

Sparkling Lake Elmo, a very deep lake, is a magnet for visitors metro-wide.

Oak Park Heights

Located on a major transit route between Stillwater and Bayport, Oak Park Heights has been a major economic beneficiary of growth in Stillwater.

Oak Park Heights was incorporated in 1959. Today, it is a major retail center with a large concentration of stores along Highway 36. Oak Park Heights is also home to the area's new high school, the state's newest and largest prison, and an underground maximum security facility.

Education

Both Lake Elmo and Oak Park Heights share the Stillwater School District 834 - which has been described as a district on the move. This district is known for its athletic, artistic and academic excellence. It boasts several state championships in sports. The large new high school which opened in the Fall of 1993 marked a new era for area students.

The new Stillwater Area High School is not only a state-of-the-art educational complex, but a community center as well. The school boasts a professional-grade auditorium, stage, and sound/lighting system - which can host performances from groups throughout the area.

District 834 also utilizes an early version of outcome based education at Stonebridge Elementary School in Stillwater. Here, multi-age groupings of students learn together.

Recreation

One of the best known parks in the area is the Lake Elmo Park Reserve located at the Junction of County Roads 19 and 10. This park offers wooded and open areas and features two large lakes. Activities and areas include archery, fishing and boating, camping, picnic and swimming areas, biking, hiking and horse trails and a fantastic play structure.

Oak Park Heights residents can enjoy a new 28 acre park near Stillwater Senior High School. Plans are being made to link bike paths within Oak Park Heights to those in Bayport, Baytown Township and Stillwater.
