According to a book titled "Eden Prairie -The First 100 Years," by Helen Holden Anderson, Eden Priarie was named by author Elizabeth Fry Ellet, who visited the area at the request of the New York Times. After her visit, she described the area as the garden spot of the territory - and the name Eden Prairie was coined.
Eden Prairie's history can be traced back to the mid 1800s, when an 1851 treaty opened the land west of the Mississippi River to settlement. The town steadily grew and developed into the Eden Prairie we know today. The late 1970s brought a huge population boom that continued through the 80s - making it the fastest growing suburb of the time. Today, the population continues to grow as Eden Prairie becomes home to more corporate headquarters and prestigious neighborhoods.
